January 7th.

Tore my left calf muscle in October and ended up at the hospital to have it looked at. Liked the doc so much I asked him if he did ACL reconstructions and had him also look at my old right knee. He informed me that he’d done over 300 and to shop around and come back if I wanted him to do it.

Came back to him the following week and booked it in.

MRI showed my ACL had been cleanly removed in a past operation when I was 23 as well as my inner meniscus that was tapered down at the time was looking a little thin as well.

The Japanese have been using the double bundle ( 2 new ACLs ) technique for about 8 or more years now and when he told me that is the way he does it, it was the first time I’d heard of it. And I thought I had studied up enough on it over the years.

Two 7mm tunnels will be drilled in my tibia and femur where the old ACL would have lined up. He’ll use two screws and two button plugs to hold it all in place. The new ligament will be formed from a long graft taken from my hamstring tendon that wraps around from the inner bag of the leg to the front of the knee. This will be a long strip of close to 15cm or more. It will also grow back (regenerate) back to normal over the following months. ( I hope ).

Will book into the hospital on Friday the 4th. Have an interview with the anesthetist, get fitted for a protective rehab brace and then have the operation Monday the 7th at 1:30pm.

Will ask if I can get the footage of the op or if they’ll take a few pics.

Going to be a long haul of rehab and no sports for a year, bar, cycling and swimming…and rehab rehab rehab.

x-rayknee,

My right knee was dislocated numerous times over the years. Initial damage done when I was about 23 by a combination of touch football, skiing, and basketball. I think the cartilage was torn first then the acl snapped in half in one or 2 games of touch football after a weekend of skiing,
Went to get it fixed by Dr. William Koch in Sydney at the time but all he did was clean it up and take out some meniscus. Could not understand why he didn’t consider a reconstruction. but seeing as I was only 23 and he was the boss, I figured he knew what was best.

it must have dislocated every year since about 4 or 5 times on average….now 49…. thats 26 years by 5 = 130 times. Some big some small….all of them annoying and mentally draining.
I’d get fit, agile, dislocate, depressed, fat, fit, agile dislocate, ad nauseum…

I almost booked in for it in Australia five years back, but being out of Australia for so long I wasn’t covered by insurance and it was going to be too costly. All up including airfares was going to run close to AU$30,000.7

This in Japan will be covered by National insurance that I’ve been paying into for close to 20 years. It will cost about $4000.00 but I’ll only have to pay 30%.
